Jammu, Mar 6: A three-day National Seminar on Biodiversity: Sustainable Development and Conservation was today inaugurated at the University of Jammu by Prof Y R Malhotra former Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu and Ex-MLC J&K State. The National Seminar is being organised by the Department of Zoology in collaboration with J&K Fisheries Department. In his inaugural address Prof Y R Malhotra highlighted the importance of Biodiversity and said that Biodiversity is as old as life on the earth. He further emphasized the relevance of 3 F's- Food, Fibre and Fuel which are the three requirements of man in perpetuating. He also referred to the great biologists who have made remarkable contributions in this field. In his presidential remarks, Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu hoped that the seminar would provide students and researchers a platform where they can share their thoughts and can interact with the eminent scientists and researchers. Earlier welcome address was presented by Prof N K Tripathi, Prof. Kuldeep K. Sharma, Head, Department of Zoology and Convener of the National Seminar dwelt in detail on the topic of the National Seminar and referring to the famous Mansar Lake. An abstract book of the seminar was also released by Prof. Y.R. Malhotra, Chief Guest and Prof. M.P.S. Ishar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, in the session. The chief guest also presented prizes to the winners of the Poster Making competition and Quiz Competition. In Poster Making Category, three winners namely Nazma Khan, IV semester student, Surbhi Sharma, II semester student and Shabina Irshad Minto, IV semester all from the Department of Zoology, University of Jammu and the Winning team of the Quiz Competition comprised of Chandni, Ruhi Jan and Neha, all fourth semester students of the Department of Zoology. The Vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Roopma Gandotra. During the technical session held in the Department of Zoology in which a total of eight invited lectures viz. Prof. B. D. Joshi, Prof. Gurstej Gandhi, Prof. Neelima Gupta, Prof. D.K. Gupta, Prof. N.K. Aggarwal, Prof. S.P.S. Dutta, Prof. Rajneesh Sharma and Prof. Anees Dua spoek on the occasion. About 30 oral presentations were delivered by the participants. A total of 250 participants from various Universities, colleges and Fishery Department attended the session. Prof. Kulwant Kour, Dean Research Studies, Prof. Manoj Dhar, Registrar, Rajesh K. Dogra, Director, J&K Fisheries Department, Prof. Desh Bandhu Gupta, Director, Colleges Development Council, Prof. V. D. Singh, Director, DDE, Prof. Dileep Singh, President JUTA, Prof. Jasbir Singh, Provost Hostels, faculty members, staff, scholars and students were present on this occasion. |
