PDP's troubles
EDITORIAL
8/4/2006 7:09:25 PM

The observation of Deputy Chief Minister and number three in the PDP
hierarchy, Muzaffar Hussain Baig that in case of one more attack by
the terrorists on the tourists in Kashmir, he will appeal to the Union
government to desist from holding any further dialogue with Pakistan,
has come as a big surprise to the political observers as well as the
common man. These remarks of Baig are in sharp contrast to the stand
taken by his party over continuous talk with Pakistan despite
escalation of terrorist related violence in Jammu and Kashmir and
other parts of the country. The PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti, who
called on the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh recently in New Delhi,
forcefully pleaded for demilitarization of J&K as well as the carrying
on the composite dialogue with Pakistan, ever after the government of
India has hardened its stands towards Pakistan in the aftermath of
Mumbai serial blasts, alleging the same having Pak links. It is well
known for sometime now that Muzaffar Hussain Baig has been toeing a
different line from the one adopted by the two top leaders of his
party, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti. In fact there are
reports of Mehbooba Mufti perturbed over their main representative in
the Ghulam Nabi Azad led coalition government, Muzaffar Hussain Baig
over leaning towards the congress and trying to come to the good books
of the Union government and the Central Congress high command.
Muzaffar Hussain Baig, who has started his political career as a
separatist, joining the People League of late Abdul Gani Lone, had
later switched his affiliation with PDP and had come closer to Mufti
Mohammad Sayeed. His drifting from the party line is causing anxiety
to both Mufti Sayeed and Mehbooba. Already another top leader of PDP,
Ghulam Hassan Mir, who was one of the founder members of the PDP has
fallen with the party leadership and though continuing in the party,
has been adopting dissident line, openly revolting against pro
separatist and secessionist postures of the party. Mir's grouse with
the party leadership has been over the later ignoring his claim to be
number 3 in the party hierarchy and instead giving this position to
Baig who joined the party much later and as per Mir is junior to him.
The PDP tipping Baig as Deputy Chief Minister in the Azad led
government , ignoring the claim of Mir to the covoted slot was the
turning point for Mir to raise a banner of revolt against the PDP
dominant leadership and form a dissident camp within the party. Lately
Ghulam Hassan Mir too has been coming closer to the Congress and has
been adopting pro Azad and pro Central government postures. Hence the
PDP's worry over losing the two top leaders of the party, who though
are personally rival to each other, but are coming closer to the
Congress, is a serious one. Apart from the remarks of Baig made in the
conference of tour and travel operators as mentioned above, is
statement in the state legislatures and even outside it, defending the
deployment of a large contingent of army and paramilitary forces in
J&K, has irked the Muftis.
