| Erratic power supply, fuel shortage irk Baramulla people | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, Mar 14: The recent snowfall has brought lot of miseries for the common people of this North Kashmir district who are already facing brunt of power curtailment and shortage of LPG cylinders. The season's unexpected heavy snowfall has damaged electric poles and blocked the link roads as well. This has compounded the problems of common masses. On the other hand, people are also being subjected to erratic power supply. Residents of Dandmooh, Darwah, Kakowthal and Harishnar areas have alleged that the curtailment schedule as drawn by the Power Development Department (PDD) is never implemented properly. The locals often complain of being left in the dark even when there is supposed to be power supply especially in winter season. "The state government seems to have left the people with no option except to protest for fulfillment of their demands. The common man in rural areas in Kashmir has got all the more reasons to worry more due to adverse winter conditions as rising fuel prices are unwanted," said Mohammad Sultan Najar, a local resident. Eighty year old Shahmali Begum said, "The PDD had also announced a power curtailment schedule that had hours of cuts even in the evening times. Same is the case in summer too. Complaints continued to pour in and autumn this year is no better than winter". In the meantime, Executive Engineer PDD Baramulla, Lateef Ahmad Shah said that the department has restored more than 80 per cent power in the district. Meanwhile, the horticulture industry has suffered losses worth in Lakhs in Kreeri, Pattan, Waripora, Thindma and Darwa area as snowfall has uprooted thousands of trees in the district. "Almost 60 percent apple trees have suffered damage due to snowfall in North Kashmir. Fresh snowfall has devastated orchards completely," said Mohammad Ramzan Dar of Kreeri. |
