| Fresh WD to hit J&K today | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 14: The MeT department has predicted heavy rain and snowfall for four days beginning from Saturday, and said that a fresh Western Disturbance over J&K and adjoining areas is likely to affect the state from 15th March (Saturday) to 18th March 2014 (Tuesday). "Under the influence of this weather system, moderate to rather heavy rain/snow would occur at many places on 15 and 16 March and at most places on 17 and 18 March, a Met official said while adding that snowfall is also likely at a few places in Ladakh region particularly in Zojila, Drass and Kargil. "During this four-day period heavy to very heavy rain/snowfall would occur at isolated places over the state. Thunder squall accompanied by hailstorm is also likely at isolated places in the state, forecasted the Met official. Meanwhile, Kargil continued to freeze as the minimum temperature was minus 14.8 degrees Celsius while chill conditions intensified in the Kashmir valley, where Gulmarg remained the coldest with minus 7 degrees night temperature. Fresh western disturbance, originating in Arabian Sea may hit the region tomorrow resulting in more rain or snow in the valley. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that Kargil recorded minus 14.8 degrees minimum temperature while it was minus 6.4 degrees at Leh in the Ladakh region. He said Gulmarg was the coldest in the Valley as the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 7 degrees, two degree below normal. Pahalgam recorded minus 4.6 degrees night temperature, the spokesman added. There was also no respite from cold in Srinagar where the minimum temperature was minus 1.9 degrees, five degrees below normal. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, recorded minus 2 degrees minimum temperature, four degree below normal while at Kokernag it was minus 2.6 degree, about three notches below normal. He said at Kupwara recorded minus 1 degrees, three degrees below normal. |
