SRINAGAR, Mar 14: A boy got killed and three others were injured after police opened fire on a group of people at Naidkhai in North Kashmir's Bandipora district.
The incident occurred after a section of locals carried out a protest demonstration against alleged high handedness of the police and security forces on a protest demonstration last week.
Reports reaching here said that after offering Friday prayers dozens of youth assembled at the Hajin Chowk in Bandipora district and started carrying out a protest demonstration against the police and security forces. The protesters raised slogans and the situation turned volatile in the area. The protesters pelted stones on a post of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) 8th Battalion.
Reports and eye-witnesses said that police and IRP personnel used batons and burst teargas canisters to disperse the stone throwing youth. The protesting youth re-assembled time and again and carried ahead with their protest demonstrations. The ding dong battles carried on for hours together with the situation turning tense in the entire area.
The situation turned ugly when a police van that was pressed to chase the protesters developed a snag near the Higher Secondary School and came under intense stone pelting from the agitating youth.
The agitated youth cornered the vehicle and tried to set it ablaze. The cops fired scores of warning shots to disperse the youth. However, the youth refused to budge.
As the situation ran out of control the cops opened random fire on the agitating youth. This led to injuries to four of the protesters. The youth identified as 19-year-old Farhat Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Rasool Dar resident of Shahgund-Hajin, Zubair Ahmad, Mohammad Sultan and Bilal Ahmed Rather were removed by the locals to the hospital.
However, Farhat succumbed to his injuries at the entrance of the Public Health Centre (PHC) Pattan. The slain boy is said to be a 12th standard student. He is survived by his father and younger sister. The news of Farhat's death spread like wildfire in Naidkhai and Hajin areas drawing hundreds of men, women and children to the roads.
Chanting slogans, the protesters staged massive protests against what they termed 'cold blooded' murder of the youth. Protests also erupted in Pattan and Palhallan areas when the news spread this evening. Groups of youth assembled at Palhallan Chowk and engaged the forces in pitched battles.
In the meantime, Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, Dr. Shah Faesal has ordered for a magisterial probe in the firing incident. The enquiry would be time bound and an additional magistrate has been appointed to investigate the killing.
A police spokesman while confirming about the incident said that in the evening hours an unruly mob in Naidkhai-Sumbal attacked a security personnel vehicle and tried to set it ablaze. Security personnel boarding the vehicle fired in air to disperse the mob in which one person got injured.
"The injured person was identified as Farhat Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Rasool resident of Shahgund, Sumbal who unfortunately died on way to the hospital. Appropriate action is being taken into the matter," said the police spokesman.
