Prime Minister had specially invited Sayeed to the occasion. Sayeed interacted with the SAARC Heads of the States and discussed the prevailing situation in the State and the region. He stressed the need for strengthening the regional cooperation, especially in the sub-continent, with Jammu and Kashmir becoming a hub of inter-regional trade and economic activity. He emphasized the need for fully opening up the State to the fast economic activities shaping up in the region so that the people of Jammu and Kashmir could also reap the benefits of the economic liberalization. Sayeed also held detailed discussions with Pakistan Foreign Minister, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri and other senior functionaries of the Government on the political situation in the region and the need for carrying forward the Confidence Building Process, especially through Jammu and Kashmir specific confidence building measures. He emphasized the need for making people-to-people contact more frequent and less hassle-free and starting cross-LoC/border trading activity between two parts on Jammu and Kashmir. The PDP Patron said people of Jammu and Kashmir must become stake-holders in the peace process through their active involvement in the economic activities in the region as they have unfortunately failed to keep pace with the rest of the world due to more than decade long turmoil in the State. He said the fresh air of globalization, market economy and liberalization could not cross into the territories of Jammu and Kashmir, denying the place and its residents an opportunity to exploit their fabled entrepreneurial, artistic and business skills. Sayeed said during the past four years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed unprecedented change on the political and economic front. He said given its immense potential and in light of it legendary place in the South Asian region and medieval business hub, Jammu & Kashmir could play a pivotal role in the region's developing market economy. He said the time has come when India and Pakistan could make Jammu and Kashmir a bridge to build new bonds of friendship to bring peace and prosperity not only to the people of the State but the region as a whole.
