| Army’s operation ‘green Ladakh’ gains momentum | | | Udhampur, Apr 04 Operation Green Ladakh was launched by Army in April 2005, under Trishul is gaining momentum in Ladakh division. The objective of the operation is to increase green cover in desert region of the state and to safeguard the habitat for fauna. Under this massive and impressive drive 44500 trees, including fruit trees, have already been planted while another one lakh trees are planned to be planted in an attempt to alter the face of mountainous desert terrain of Ladakh. Being conscious of the fact that such a drive can not succeed without willing and active participation of local populace, Army has presented and excellent model of Government-Public partnership, under Operation Sadbhavana incentives in the form of Green Houses, Micro Hydel Projects, Bore wells and Hand Pumps were provided to local communities. Sustained campaign were run through Awareness Camps during Ladakh Ekta Utsav, besides regular interactions with village Sarpanches elders, Women were educated through Audit Literacy Centers (ALCs) and Women Empowerment Centers (WECs). In recognition of these efforts of Trishul Division, the Bombay Natural History Society has awarded the Division the ‘Green Governance- award 2006’ in the category of ‘Conservation of Fauna’. The presentation ceremony was held on 21 Mar 2007 at Bombay where Governor of Maharashtra, SM Krishna presented the award to Maj Gen AK Lal, General Officer Commanding, Trishul Division. Speaking on the occasion Maj Gen Lal thanked BNHS for recognizing the efforts of army nd said that since climatic conditions and terrain limit the access of governmental organizations and NGOs to Ladakh region for almost seven months in a year, the army, realizing its role and potential as an intimate arm of the nation, has taken up efforts for protection of diverse fauna and ecosystem in the region. He said that improvement of infrastructure at the wetlands will become a boon for the scientists and researchers and if the focus and momentum is maintained in the right areas. The diverse terrain and wild life of this region will also become an eco-tourism attraction, bringing related benefits to Ladakh region.
