| Mid-day meal scheme being extended to upper primary: Peerzada | | | Jammu, Apr 5 The government is proposing the extension of ambitious Mid Day meal Scheme to the upper Primary level. The action plan proposes covering of around 14.43 Lakh children studying in government schools upto eighth standard. This was revealed at a meeting held here today convened by Minister for Education, Information Technology and Science technology Peerzada Mohammad Sayed to review the implementation of various centrally sponsored schemes . Secretary Education Mr. Khazir Mohammad Wani and other senior officers attended the meeting. It was informed that the Action Plan formulated for the year 2007-08 proposes for extension of the scheme to the upper primary classes. Presently the scheme is being implemented upto primary school level. The scheme envisages provision for nutritious food of 450 calories and about 12 grams of proteins to be served to children at Government schools. Addressing the meeting, Minister said that the scheme aims at attracting maximum enrollment of the students particularly from the deprived sections of the society. He said the scheme has not only helped in arresting the dropout in schools but also helped in containing mal-nutrition that lead to Anemia, a problem common amongst the poor children. Calling for effective implementation of the scheme, Minister said close monitoring is indispensable to ensure that the benefits percolate down to the targeted section of the society. Secretary education, Mr. Wani said that a meeting of all zonal officers of Jammu Division would be convened on April 19 to evolve an effective mechanism for maintaining transparency in the implementation of the scheme. “Enforcement of accountability at every level of the implementation of the scheme would be another important aspect to taken care off”, he said adding that a similar meeting would be held at Srinagar.
