BJP hails Muslim ruling, NCM cites "simple arithmetic"
4/6/2007 12:25:57 AM

NEW DELHI, APR 5
The BJP today welcomed the Allahabad High Court ruling over the minority status of Muslims in Uttar Pradesh, calling it indictment of the UPA government's welfare programmes for the community.
"It is a welcome judgement, an overdue one," senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra said as the court came out with its ruling based on population and census statistics of religious minorities.
The BJP leader echoed the Sangh stand in general on designating communities as minorities, saying the people of the country cannot be divided in groups on the basis of population of different faiths.
"This judgement is a virtual indictment of the UPA that is deep into minority appeasement for sheer vote-bank politics," Malhotra said.
In his comments. BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said there should be a national debate on designating communities as minorities.
In his remarks, National Commission for Minorities (NCM) chief Hamid Ansari insisted that arithmetic sets out which community makes up a minority.
"In relation to 51, 49 is a minority and in relation to 49, 51 is a majority. So if there is an arithmetical test to be applied, this figure of 13 or 18 per cent will stand self-evident as a minority," he remarked.
Ansari said he was yet unware of what criteria the court had used in its judgement.
"... If the judge has used some other criteria, then it is not clear yet and we will have to wait for the text of the judgement," he said.
