| UP polls big challenge for Mulayam Yadav | | BSP's 'Diamond' woman ahead of Congress's 'Rajmata' | | NEW DELHI, Apr 11 As the process of putting in place a new Legislative Assembly in Uttar Pradesh is on, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) led by the 'Diamond' woman, Mayawati, has established a comfortable lead, politically speaking, over the Congress party headed by Sonia Gandhi, who is, for a large number of her partymen, 'Rajmata'. Even government sleuths have reportedly found the BSP's 'Diamond' woman with a larger number of takers in UP than those supporting the Congress party in the ongoing battle of the ballot. Significantly, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) with a better political base in UP than that of the Congress is trying to ensure two things in the event of emergence of a hung Assembly--first, to make the task of Mulayam Singh Yadav, supremo of the Samajwadi Party, very dificult in forming a government once again, and, two, to join hands with Mayawati; BSP to keep away the Congress party from government formation process. With most opinion polls predicting that the BSP is all set to emerge as the single largest party in UP, the BSP is at a critical stage in the campaign for the UP Assembly election. ayawati needs to sustain her winning streak. And so the rallies are huge with swelling crowds and blue flags all aflutter. Thousands wait for hours under a hot sun for Behnji to provide words of hope. The BSP chief’s big message in this campaign is that the party is no longer just a Bahujan Samaj Party, instead it is a party of the samta mulk samaj or a party for all Brahmins, Jats and Dalits. Every opinion poll now shows Mayawati in the lead but what has changed for BSP that has never quite been UP's numero uno party till now? But it is the support that she is now getting from a section of the upper caste that is making the difference, with even Jats not unwilling to vote for the BSP. It is also apparent that Mayawati's campaign is far more efficiently organised this time around. The Bahujan volunteer force or Mayawati's private army stands on guard at all rallies. Blue sari-clad women volunteers manage the crowds while the dais is set apart from the people. Her campaign slogan may have changed but her imperious style has not. It is in western UP, which has a number of Muslim communities that Mayawati really needs to score against UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav if she is to successfully challenge him and to emerge as the single largest party in the State.
