Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Apr 26 : Following fierce gunfight between a joint team of security forces and heavily armed militants in Shopian in which an army major and sepoy attained martyrdom while eliminating them, a general high alert was also sounded in and around areas bordering Srinagar district ahead of the April 30 polling on Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat.
Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and former state Finance Minister Tariq Hamid Qarra are locked in a close contest on the high profile seat.
Both Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Dr Farooq Abdullah have been engaged in aggressive campaigning in the run up to the polls on the other hand PDP top brass is also focusing all its energies to make inroads in the NC bastion.
Though Dr Abdullah enjoys considerable majority among the electorate in Srinagar but common masses are disenchanted with poor governance and may turn out in large numbers to vote for change, joining the nationwide surge.
The incumbent Congress led UPA govt is already unpopular in Kashmir valley as no forward movement on resolution of the Kashmir issue took place. The moderate and hardline factions of Hurriyat Conference, upbeat over the poll boycott call in Anantnag are going to test political waters and enforce poll boycott call in some pockets of old Srinagar and their strong holds.
On the security front with just two days remaining for the campaigning the security forces have been maintaining tight vigil on the movement of the suspected people and trouble makers in down town areas.
The paramilitary forces have been deployed in large numbers to address concerns raised by the polling staff following attack on the polling staff in Shopian in which one school teacher was killed and security personnel were injured.
"The main city centres and prominent places around Srinagar are being tightly guarded to prevent any untoward incident", a senior police officer incharge of security duties said claiming a general alert has been sounded and special naka points have been set up to regulate the movement of commuters and wherever necessary frisking and general checking was also going on to instill confidence among the common people.
