Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 30: In wake of their long pending demands regarding the steep hike in hostel fees by 85% , students and Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad activists of Jammu University boycotted their classes on 50th day terming fee hike as illogical, irrelevant and irrational.
It is pertinent to mention here that the vice chancellor has admitted that only 10-15% of fees can be increased per year according to Jammu University statutes and that the increased fees by 85% is in violation of Jammu University statutes.
The protesting students were led by Ashwani Sharma (president Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad).
The protesting students after boycotting their classes marched towards Bikram Chowk in the shape of a rally where students sat on Dharna for 15 minutes and thereby blocked the National Highway. After that the J&K police authorities intervened in the matter and tried to pacify the protesting students.
The students then moved back towards Vice Chancellor secretariat and ghereoad for about one hour but there was no serious concern on the part of the Jammu University authorities and the Vice Chancellor did not pay any heed for the genuine demands of students community. While addressing students on the occasion, Sanjay Singh (organizer ABVP JU) said that the agitation has entered 50th day but there seems to be no seriousness on the part of the Vice-Chancellor. He warned the Vice Chancellor to accept the students demand and immediately order roll back of fees hike otherwise the students will be forced to adopt other techniques and measures for which Vice Chancellor will be fully responsible. Others who were presented included Harsh Kanav, Ajay, Jatin, Shakeel and Amit.
