JAMMU, Apr 30: Intensifying the ongoing agitation against the police for the atrocities committed by the police personnel of Police Station Gandhi Nagar on one of their senior member Harshwardhan Gupta, the J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu today held strong protest/ demonstrations in the court complex, Janipur and thereafter held a protest Dharna at Panjthirthi, outside the Raj Bhawan, wherein the procession was addressed by the President, J&K High Court Bar Association M K Bhardwaj, O P Sharma, V R Wazir, D K Khajuria, Sunil Sethi, DK Khajuria (Former Presidents), Senior Advocates, B S Manhas, BB Kotwal, H C Jhalmeria, Vice President Sindhu Sharma, General Secretary Ranjit Singh Jamwal and others who lodged a strong protest against the senior police officials who are protecting the erring police personnel of Police Station Gandhi Nagar involved in the brutal acts of beating, illegal detention and atrocities on Advocate Harshvardhan Gupta for reasons best known to them. While condemning the illegal and unwarranted acts of the police personnel, President of the Association, M K Bhardwaj, and other speakers reiterated their demand of immediate suspension of accused for conducting an impartial, independent and fair inquiry by an independent agency and warned those who are indulging in disinformation campaign through social media by quoting witnesses who are tutored and some of having criminal background and thereby trying to distort the real facts and projecting a story which is contrary to the real one, with an intention to mislead the public. Speaking against the increasing high handedness and atrocities of police on the common citizens of which the recent incident can be quoted as a tip of the iceberg the members reiterated that supremacy of rule of law must prevail which is paramount in a civilized society. Reaffirming its stand, Association confirmed that suspension which is not at all a punishment, as is being projected by the police authorities, neither amounts to victimization nor demoralization of police officials responsible for beating and illegally detaining its member Harshwardhan Gupta and instead is a pre requisite for holding fair, impartial and independent inquiry, as a rule of law which should be adopted by the police and state authorities to restore the lost confidence of the lawyers in particular and public in general. Later in the day, a delegation led by President, JKHCBA, Jammu, M K Bhardwaj comprising of its office bearers, former Presidents, senior advocates and office bearers of the YLA, on being invited on a written communication by the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu met him for further talks in presence of DIG, Dy Commissioner and SSP, Jammu and apprised them again and reiterated its demand for suspension of the erring police officials immediately as the case is appropriate for such disciplinary action, so that an independent, impartial and fair inquiry in the matter can be conducted at the earliest, to restore the public confidence. |
