North Kashmir observes shutdown

BARAMULLA, Apr 30: complete shutdown was observed in North Kashmir's Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts in response to a call given by Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The pro-freedom amalgam had called for complete strike and has asked the people for boycott of parliamentary elections and to keep away from polling booths on April 30.
According to reports that North Kashmir's Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts has observed complete shutdown. As there was thin movement of private transport in all district headquarters, governmental and private institutions were shut.
Reports said that hundreds of youth took to the streets and staged pro-freedom demonstrations at Palhallan, Pattan, Old Town Baramulla, Hajin, and Trehgam and other areas of the district headquarters. However heavy contingent of government forces were deployed there resorted to baton charge and fired numerous tear smoke canisters to disperse them. After which, they retaliated by pelting stones triggering clashes. Shops and other commercial business establishments were completely shut across north Kashmir. The schools, banks, and other institutions were also shut while public transport was also off the roads. All the major roads leading to the main towns wore a deserted look. Youth were fighting pitched battles with policemen and troopers in Baramulla area. in the afternoon youth appeared on cement Bridge and other streets and pelted stones on government vehicles. Eyewitness said that two persons were injured in Baramulla and Kupwara district during the clashes while police and CRPF used scores of tear-smoke shells to disperse the protestors. Policemen and CRPF troopers deployed there resorted to baton charge and fired tear smoke canisters to disperse them. Protesters offered stiff resistance and retaliated by pelting stones in the ensuing clashes number of youth, sustained injuries, said eyewitness.
Meanwhile, All party Hurriyat Confrence Jammu Kashmir Lead by Geelani and Mirwaiz called for a complete shutdown on Thursday against the killing of youth in Nawakadal area of Srinagar.
The clashes were going on till last reports came in.
