| Peace key to development, public holds key: Azad | | Ramban, Kishtwar accord rousing reception to CM | | JAMMU, APRIL 12 Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Thursday that peace is the key to prosperity and development. Public support in this regard is imperative, he added. Addressing massive public meetings at Ramban and Kishtwar after inaugurating District Development Commissioners’ offices, Chief Minister beseeched upon people to play their all important role in restoring tranquility and peace in the state. “A new era of development has already dawned in the state and initiatives taken to restore peace are gaining momentum. Each one of us can contribute in pulling the state out of economic distress created by militancy”, he said. Chief Minister said that tourism bore the maximum brunt and received a severe jolt during 17 years of militancy putting the sector into shambles. In the past, thousands of tourists would throng Jammu and Kashmir giving fillip to economy besides creating employment opportunities, he said and added that militancy has given nothing but bloodshed and economic distress. “Government alone cannot reverse the situation and put every institution back on rails, unless people extend their whole hearted support”, Mr. Azad maintained. Congratulating people of the new twin districts of Ramban and Kishtwar, he said that the creation of new administrative units would result focused attention to these difficult and mountainous regions. He stated that the carving out these two new districts from the Doda district will ensure speedier development in these hilly, backward and remote areas. Explaining that the birth of eight new districts is much more than what Wazir Commission had recommended, he said in this manner the aspirations of the people living in far-flung areas have been adequately addressed. Mr. Azad said government has not only fulfilled the promises made in Common Minimum Programme but gone for ahead of it, adding that all areas of the state would get improved education, health, drinking water and road connectivity facilities in next four years. Mr. Azad said that by connecting Kashmir with national railway network via existing railway system in Jammu and construction of intra-district and intra-provincial road trunks, the socio-economic condition of the people would achieve new highs. This, he said, would also relieve the people of valley from difficulties they face in winter owing to blockade of national highway. Referring to the importance of availability of power for the development and progress, Chief Minister said that added attention has already been paid to this sector. He said Dul Hasti Power project has been put on test run and work on other projects is going apace. “Self-reliance in power generation would create tremendous employment opportunities”, he said. Speaking on the occasion Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar said that creation of Ramban and Kishtwar districts would yield numerous public benefits and pave the way for speedy development of backward areas. Mr. Zargar said feasibility of diversified horticulture and agriculture activities in the new districts would be identified and schemes put in place accordingly for integrated development of this sector. He said during last four years government paid full attention for development of far off and backward areas and a number of schemes have already been launched to this regard. Minister of State for Agriculture Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Khan and MLA Banihal Molvi Abdul Rashid speaking at Ramban expressed gratitude to chief Minister for his keen interest in the development of hilly, backward and rural areas. MLC Mr. Mohammad Sharief Niaz and MLA Mr. G. M. Saroori addressed public meeting at Kishtwar. They highlighted the achievements of government registered in the state and said that Mr. Azad’s efforts have given new meaning to development. Chief Minister was received by enthusiastic crowds at Kishtwar and Ramban giving him rousing reception and raising pro-Azad and pro-government slogans.
