National Highway blocked for 2 hours as protests rock Ramban
4/12/2007 2:39:23 PM
Ramban, April 12
A large number of people took to street and staged a protest demonstration over the arrest of three youth, soon after the chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad left the town after addressing a public rally, here this morning.
Two local youth were picked up by police soon after people started leaving the venue of the public rally. The youth were said to be part of the curious mob which had gathered from far flung areas of the mountainous district to hear Azad at the inaugural function of deputy commissioner’s office.
Sources said that police had received specific inputs from the army intelligence which led to the arrest of three youth. One of them has been identified as Farooq Ahmad from Duligam Banihal.
However, as soon as the news of arrest of local youth spread in the town, people took to streets and blocked the National Highway near busy Dumail Ramban chowk.
Shouting anti-police and anti-government slogans, the protestors were demanding immediate release of the youth who according to them were innocent. “Police is wrongly labeling them as militants only to show higher authorities their efficiency” Nazir Ahmed a protestor alleged, adding that youth belong to a far off village and had come to listen Azad Shaib’s speech.
On assurance of police and civil authorities that the youth would be released after confirming their identity from the concerned police station, the protestors dispersed and the traffic on the Highway was resumed.
However, the police struggled to restore the traffic and normalize the situation. The blockade of vehicular movement for more than two hours created panic among the passengers on their way to Srinagar to Jammu.
Confirming the arrests, DIG Udhampur Doda Range L Mohanty said that the youth have been arrested on suspicion. He however, said that they would be released if the concerned police station would clear their identity.
