Early Times Report

Jammu, May 8: Medanta-The Medicity, Gurgaon launched India's first MRI/TRUS fusion prostate biopsy system in its facilities. The state-of-the-art 3D semi-robotic prostate biopsy system is capable of targeting specific areas for biopsy that are identified on multi-parametric MRI using advanced image fusion with real-time ultrasound, navigation and guidance techniques. This will improve appropriate diagnosis and subsequent medical management for treating prostate cancer.
The FDA approved MRI/TRUS fusion biopsy system creates a synergy between radiology and urology. The team of expert radiologists and urologists at Medanta will identify suspicious areas for prostate cancer using multi-parametric MRI that has been shown to have greater sensitivity and accuracy compared to traditional PSA-based screening methods and then will target the lesions identified by the radiologists for biopsy using a fusion of MRI and real-time ultrasound.
"Conventional ultrasound-only biopsies are blind as Ultrasound cannot identify cancer regions in the prostate and can miss cancer" said Dr. N.P. Gupta, Chairman, Academics and Research Division Urology at Medanta.
"The fusion of MRI and ultrasound using this latest technology allows us to perform tumour-directed prostate biopsies that will lead to early and accurate detection of prostate cancer. The technology has been shown to promote higher detection of clinically significant cancer and lower detection of clinically insignificant cancer."said Dr Rakesh Khera Assoc Director Division of Urology.
In Jammu Rajiv Misra AVP-Marketing & Community Outreach Programme along with Sudhanshu Sharma Head J&K Told Media & Press that Launch of India's first MRI/TRUS fusion prostate biopsy systemis in Medanta will improve appropriate diagnosis and subsequent medical management for treating prostate cancer.
