Parents disrupt competition, ‘abuse’ DG Sports
JAMMU, May 8: Angry parents of those young school going players of Taekwondo today disrupted the judo competition at Indoor Complex, MA Stadium, here and later used abusing language against the Director General (DG) Youth Services and Sports amidst protest outside his office chamber. Accompanied by their wards, the protesting parents wanted to meet the Director General, Navin Agarwal to convey him the difficulties but the officer was reluctant to meet the angry parents. Finding it difficult to make way to the DG’s chamber, these parents lodged protest against the department and its officials amidst slogans against DG Sports and Minister for Sports. Failing in their attempts to pacify the protesting parents and their wards, the staff of the DG’s office instead called the police and within no time the Station House Officer Nawabad reached the spot. He, however, managed to control the protesters. The officer took the parents, who were adamant to meet the DG Sports, to a separate room to calm them down. By the time parents conveyed their grievances to the SHO, DG Sports left his office in a hurry to avoid confrontation. These parents told the police officer that after waiting for long for the taekwondo competition, their wards were informed by the officials of DYSS that the event has been cancelled for lack of participation. “They have no right to victimize young players on the pretext of less participation. It becomes the responsibility of the department to ensure a minimum number of competitors for an event. And, if you could not find the required number for an event there should be selection-cum-competition to accommodate those who have made to the venue,” an angry parent said. On being contacted an official of the DYSS, pleading anonymity, disclosed that the DG Sports, who supervised today’s competition, ordered the concerned staff not to hold events for those disciplines where there was less participation. “The Department (Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) lack proper system to handle sports and sportspersons. The ill equipped staff and poor administrative set-up leads to such mismanagement and protests from the parents and players,” one of the protesting parents told SAN. Earlier, only one weight category was decided in boys’ judo competition today. In this below 25 kg event of under-14, Shivam Biloria of BSF School bagged first place while Rahul of Shastri Memorial remained runners-up. Meanwhile, in a separate handout issued here today, the DYSS has postponed the inter-school competitions in the disciplines of Taekwondo, Wushu, Squay Martal Arts and Thang-Tha boys’ under-14 and under-17 year. The fresh dates for the competition shall be communicated to the participating schools in due course of time. ----------
