| Hakeem for comprehensive plan to revamp SRTC | | | Jammu, April 17 Minister for Transport Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen today announced that a comprehensive plan would be formulated soon to revamp and revitalize the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC). He said corporation has realized revenue of over Rs 72 crore during 2006-07 by operating nearly 1200 buses and trucks across the state and by providing inter-state services. This was stated by the Minister at a high level officers meeting called to review the functioning of the corporation here today. He said annual budgetary support has been raised to Rs 16 crore for the Corporation as the government endeavours to reshape it for making it people-friendly so that timely and comfortable passenger services are provided to the people. He said the tourist and inter-state fleets of the corporation would be strengthened to increase the revenue, adding that additional Rs 15 crore would be provided to the corporation during this year for adding more buses in its fleet. Underlining the need for strenuous steps to bring SRTC back on rails, the Minister said that government would strive hard to run the corporation on profit basis. He emphasized for making foolproof checking system to control the overloading menace in the corporation buses being operated on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and inter-state services adding that for the purpose special squads would be set up. He sought detailed report about the appointments made in the SRTC during last two years and asked to intensify the process for auction of old buses besides identification of surplus staff in the Corporation. He said he himself would conduct surprise checking of the passenger buses saying that the unscrupulous employees would not be spared. The Minister said that new transfer policy would be introduced in Transport and its line departments to create transparency in the functioning of all the wings of the department. He directed to speed up the process for recovering of outstanding balance of Rs 8 crore from the Food Corporation of India and also to intensify the process for utilization of SRTC assets at Pathankot and Sangam adding that the amount would be used for the benefit of its employees. He also sought the report about those six buses purchased recently by the SRTC, which are not reportedly upto the mark. The Minister advised the employees to avoid strikes instead solve their problems through negotiations. He directed for immediate repairs of vehicles and stressed for proper management in the functioning of the corporation so that available resources are utilized properly for the benefit of the corporation as well as its workers. The meeting took several decisions to improve the functioning of the corporation for making it a viable institution.
