Rughnath Koul’s 3rd death anniversary
Memorial Trust honours Prof Mattoo, others

For his outstanding contribution in transforming the educational system in Jammu, the city of temples, Prof Amitabh Mattoo, Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu, was felicitated on the third death anniversary of Pt Rugh Nath Koul, a great legal luminary of Kashmir, at a function organized by the Rugh Nath Koul Memorial Trust here today. .
In his key note address, Prof Mattoo highlighting his vision for future expansion of quality education in the state said that the improvement in educational standards would lead to positive social transformation and civic emancipation and recalled the services rendered by late Koul in the judicial field. Describing late Koul as a legal luminary and philanthropist, Prof Mattoo said that late advocate had always been in the fore front to plead the cause of the poor and oppressed classes
Enumerating the aims and objective of the Trust, Moti Koul, said that it has decided to recognize the social contribution of individuals and institutions and today’s function is a humble beginning in this direction.
The Trust has instituted three ‘Smriti Samman’ for laudable contribution in various fields. The first such award for 2006 was given to Shirya Bhatt Medical Mission, which was received by its patron, Dr K L Choudhary. The first award carried Rs, one lakh cash prize and a certificate of merit. The second Smriti Samman was given to Old Age Home Ambphala, which was jointly received by its President D N Gupta and Secretary Vijay Bargotra, besides a certificate of merit and a cash award of Rs.21000. The third award was given to Government Mixed Higher Secondary School Purkhoo. The headmaster of the school, V K Moza received the award on behalf of the school. The award carried a certificate of merit and cash prize of Rs.21, 000.
Rafiq Sadiq, paying homage to late Koul, said that he was a great legal luminary of Kashmir and was popularly known as ‘Lala’
The function was among others attended by Dr Agnishker, Amar Nath Vaishnavi, Shyam Koul, Bansi Koul, Dr Rafiq Masoodi, Ramesh Metha, Dr Khema Koul and Padam Nath Koul (Vakil).
