| HC directs SPCB to furnish status | | Action taken against hotels without STPs | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 17 : Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed J&K State Pollution Control Board to furnish status about the action taken against at-least 30 hotels functioning without a Sewerage Treatment Plant in Jammu, the winter capital of the state. The direction by a division bench of the court comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice M H Attar followed perusal of the latest status report by SPCB stating that it was proceeding against 30 hotels in category-A which are without facility of STPs and have not obtained consent from it. The SPCB also stated it has suspended commercial operation of 39 hotels functioning in Katra and 15 hotels at Patnitop. "Their commercial operations have been suspended as no consent from the Board has been obtained and they are found to be without STPs," the SPCB said. The report also pointed out that in respect of the hotels in Srinagar, 72 hotels are connected to common STPs whereas 13 hotels have their individual STPs. "The data has been furnished that there are 244 category-A hotels functioning in the Srinagar. It has also been stated that future connectivity of hotels to the common STPs is to be assessed by UEED and LAWDA because at this stage it was not known as to how much of sewage from residential area is presently being catered by the common STPs and whether the common STPs would be able to cater any further load or not," the division bench after perusal of the report and directed that latest report, discussing the status of STPs in these areas, has to be furnished. Meanwhile, SPCB also filed report in compliance to direction for clarification with regard to functioning of STPs installed in 11 hotels under category-A in Pahalgam. Out of 35 hotels, only 11 had installed STPs and five of them were found to have their STPs functioning, whereas the other 6 hotels did not have STPs functional. The SPCB clarified that only 5 hotels were permitted to undertake their commercial operations. In another direction, the division bench directed the State to file status with regard to installation of common STPs to the hotels in the Srinagar city and the time period within which installation could be completed. "The needful be done before the next date of hearing with a copy in \advance to the counsel opposite," the division bench said and posted the case, A Public Interest Litigation, on 05-06-2014. The court also observed that complete status regarding issue concerning the STPs in the Government accommodations has not been filed and directed the concerned authorities to furnish the status of working of STPs in all these places. |
