Hakeem reviews transportation of essentials to Ladakh

Jammu, April 19
Minister for Transport Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen has said that the 400 km Srinagar-Leh National Highway would be thrown open for traffic on 25th of April 2007 adding that road is being made traffic worthy 20 days ahead of scheduled date.
Speaking at a high level officers meeting convened to take stock of the movement of supplies to Ladakh region, the Minister directed for operation of light vehicles from 25th April, on trial basis while as the road would be operational fully from Ist May,2007 for heavy vehicular traffic.
He said priority would be accorded for transportation of essential supplies including foodgrains, construction material and fuel etc for summer season and stocking of supplies for the winter season as well before the road is again closed for traffic in November, so that the people living in Ladakh region do not face any problem during winter months.
The Minister stressed the concerned for taking every possible effort so that all supplies reach to the region well in time. Reviewing the stock position in the twin districts of Leh and Kargil, Mr. Yaseen said that food grain which would suffice upto ending June, 2007 are available at depots adding that ten more trucks of essentials would be dispatched per day for the region as soon as the road becomes operational. He stressed to complete the repairs and renovation work of the road by April 24th. He directed to provide one mobile workshop and recovery van at Sonamarg to facilitate the transporters along the road besides taking concrete measures to check the menace of overloading. He asked the concerned to upgrade the bridges along the road besides shifting of weigh-bridge at Sonamarg to next place to avoid the traffic jams in the Sonamarg market.
The meeting discussed in detail various issues relating to the smooth regulation of traffic on the highway which included setting up of Petrol pump, providing of medicare facilities etc.
Secretary Tourism Mr. Nayeem Akhtar informed that the Tourism department has constructed a truck terminal at Sonamarg having capacity of 500 trucks. He said the department would provide a site with in the terminal for setting up of a workshop by SRTC.
Among others the meeting was attended by Minister for Social Welfare Haji Nissar Ali, legislators from Leh and Kargil districts, Commissioner Secretary CAPD, Secretaries of Tourism and R&B departments, Inspector General of Traffic, Deputy Commissioners of Leh and Kargil, Chief Engineers of various engineering departments and representatives of Army, Becon and Indian Oil Corporation besides senior functionaries of the administration.
