| Shardha Peeth University vision unfolded | | Governor eulogizes KPs contribution to State, Nation | | JAMMU, MARCH 19 Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha today unfolded his vision of reviving Shardapeeth and urged Kashmiri Pandits to come forward for making this dream a reality for disseminating education and forging amity and harmony. Presenting scholarships to students at a function organised by Kashmiri Sewak Samaj Faridabad, Kashmir Education, Culture and Science Society New Delhi and SoS Children’s Villages here this evening, the Governor referred to the thought emerging on the revival of the Peeth and said he envisioned setting up of Shardha Peeth University in Srinagar with a sizable reservation for Kashmiri Pandit students. ‘Let this be a centre of wisdom and knowledge in consonance with the glorious ethos of the Peeth’, he said hoping that the facility will prove beneficial for the society as a whole irrespective of cast, creed and colour. He said education has been the greatest strength of Kashmiri Pandits and eulogized the community for its mammoth contribution to the State and the Nation. ‘Though very little in numbers Kashmiri Pandits have immensely contributed in national development’. He, however, expressed anguish over the plight of a section of the community living in migrant camps and said the Government is endeavoring to improve their quality of life. In this context, he praised the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh who readily agreed to his suggestion of raising two-room tenements at various camp sites and earmarked funds for the purpose. Though the implementation of the construction programmes has been a little tardy yet efforts are now being made to expedite the work. He regretted that Kashmiri Pandits were being referred to migrants and not the refugees, who have suffered during past 18 years. The Governor commended the efforts of various social organizations of Kashmiri Pandits for coming forward to promote education among the poor students by way of providing scholarships. He hailed that the monthly scholarships have been raised from a very meager amount per month to the range up to Rs 1500 and said this will help promising students immensely. He also noted with satisfaction the number of beneficiaries getting doubled from 500 to 1000 and said this is the real spirit of leading children from darkness to light. General Sinha had all praise for SOS Villages for taking responsibility of providing homes and education to orphans. He said that he was impressed by the work being done by it in various parts of the country. ‘In Assam, I have seen how much work the organisation is doing’, he added. The Governor, the Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Prof N K Bansal, the President SOS Children’s Villages of India Mr J N Koul and other dignitaries of various KP organizations and heads of educational institutions presented cheques of scholarships to around 350 students from various schools of Jammu and Udhampur. In his welcome address, Mr Koul complimented various organizations and individuals for extending financial support to carry forward the mission. Under the Family Strengthening Programme, the SOS Children’s Villages of India is providing financial assistance to widows for education of their children. The number of such beneficiaries is nearly 350 and the result of this programme is being regularly monitored. Mr Koul said that education is the plank, which can enable youngsters to live a respectable life. The scholarship scheme was conceptualized by Mr Koul after his routine visit to the displaced camps in Jammu and Udhampur a few years ago and it was decided to cover students from 6th to 12th class. The scheme covers both meritorious and poor students. Mr Koul presented mementos to the Governor and the Vice Chancellor. The programme started with Sarwasati Vandna and a large number of people were present on the occasion.
