Sunderbani, April 19 Hitting back at PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said that government is contemplating to strengthen the Village Defence committees by equipping them with more sophisticated weapons.
Hinting that government has no plan to disband Village Defence Committees, he said considering the security of people in far flung areas VDCs would be further strengthened and equipped with latest weapons.
Mehbooba Mufti in a public meeting at Kishtwar on Wednesday had demanded disbanding of VDCs claiming that these are creating divide between the communities
Addressing a public meeting at Sunderbani, chief minister said “people in rural areas are feeling insecure and there is a need to equip the VDCs with latest weapons as we cannot leave our people at the mercy of militants”.
Rejecting the demand without naming PDP, he said people have great faith in Army and VDCs and in such a situation there is no reason for withdrawal of troops or disbanding of Village Defence Committees. He said government would not succumb to any pressure at the cost of the security of the people.
