| HC asks DCs to ensure essentials are sold at fixed price | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 6: Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed all Deputy Commissioners across the state to ensure that essential commodities are sold at rates fixed by the department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD). "The month of Ramadan is likely to start by the end of June and man on the street is not still aware about rates of essential commodities. The possibility of providing healthy competition by the state by opening their own shops to sell essential commodities has also not been explored nor displaying of the rate list on hoardings in various public places has been achieved," a Division Bench of Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice M H Attar said while hearing a Public Interest Litigation. "The rates have to be displayed on hoardings," the court said and directed CAPD to sent the rate list fixed by it to all Deputy Commissioner within two days. "The rate list should also be displayed on website of CAPD and emailed to all the Deputy Commissioners. All the Deputy Commissioners shall ensure displaying the rates on hoardings in the crowded area in their respective districts so that everyone is aware about the rate of essential commodities and there is no overcharging," the court said, and also directed the Deputy Commissioners to ensure compliance of rates as displayed on the hoardings. To achieve the purpose, the court also said that DCs may constitute the flying squad to check whether the rates are charged as per the rates decided by CAPD. "Any person indulging in unnecessary profiteering shall be booked," the court said. The PIL filed by Advocate G M Wani among other directions seeks reinforcement of relevant laws to curb price rise of local bread, vegetables, mutton, and poultry. The petitioner has accused the concerned authorities of having failed to ensure that the dealers stick to the prices fixed by the government and not let the general public suffer at the impulse of the dealers. |
