IT raids continue on second day, Saraf’s residence raided
Dewan Bansal surrenders undisclosed income of 1.75 crore

Continuing its drive against the tax evaders, sleuths of Income Tax (IT) Investigation Wing today carried out another raid in the Gandhi Nagar residence of prominent businessman, Piara Lal Saraf and seized some incriminating documents and cash. According to sources, the name of PL Saraf figured in one of the documents seized during yesterday’s raid carried out in the residential and official complexes of some prominent businessmen.
Meanwhile, Dewan Bansal, one of the businessmen whose house and business establishments were raided, surrendered an amount of Rs 1.75 crore as undisclosed income before the IT sleuths today.
According to sources, verification of the documents, seized during yesterday’s raids, guided IT deptt to further carry out raid in the Gandhi Nagar residence of Piara Lal Saraf. The raid continued till late evening during which several more incriminating documents and cash amount was seized.
On the other hand, Dewan Bansal surrendered an amount of Rs 1.75 crore as an undisclosed income before IT officials, sources added.
Yesterday, undisclosed and unaccounted amount of Rs one crore was recovered from the residence of Dewan Bansal and an amount of Rs 25 lakhs was recovered from the house of a prominent contractor, Nagar Singh’s residence.
Meanwhile, these raids have sent a shock wave among the businessmen of the city, particularly those, who are in the habit of evading taxes and misrepresenting their income.
IT sleuths, today went through all the documents seized during yesterday’s raids. As per official sources, the verification of documents has proved that all the businessmen whose residential and officials premises were raided yesterday had evaded tax to the tune of more than 15 crore of rupees. And it is expected that figure may touch the mark of 25 crore after the completion of verification.
According to sources, IT team is also going through the details of the bank accounts and lockers of these erring businessmen and trying to uncover the clandestine dealings.
The official premises of these businessmen have been sealed and will remain so till the completion of the enquiry process. The joint team of Additional Director IT Ludhiana, Govind Lal and Assistant Director IT (Investigation Wing) Jammu, Rakesh Kumar remained busy throughout the day in scanning the seized documents.
When contacted, Director General Investigation Wing, IT Deptt, V D S Balhara said records were subjected to thorough verification and results are expected to come out after the completion of the process. He expressed satisfaction over the successful conduct of the raids and said that department will not spare any one indulging in tax evasion. “We have been time and again advising the people to disclose exact income and pay tax accordingly”, he added.
