| GBSF resents government move to shift Gujjars, Bakerwals | | | Jammu April 20 Expressing serious concern over the government’s move to remove the Gujjars and Bakerwals from the wildlife and forest areas of the State to some other places, Shahnawaz Choudhary, State President of Gujjar Bakerwal Students Front (GBSF), University of Jammu, accused the government of ethnic cleansing the cultural identify and heritage of Gujjars and Bakerwals in the state. He said the Forest Department intends to adopt the Uttrakhand Government model in respect of settlement of Gujjars and Bakerwals in Jammu and Kashmir, the Gujjar leader said this model can not be accepted here as there is lot of difference in the topography of both the states. The proposed move has caused a great deal of insecurity and confusion among the tribal community, he said and added that the government has already banned the entry of Gujjars and Bakerwals in the wild life areas, causing economic as well as traditional loss to the community. Another Gujjar leader Waheed Choudhry alleged that an attempt is being made to isolate this community from their age old green pastures and areas of permanent habitat and settlement which they occupy seasonally and appealed to the Chief Minister to reconsider the proposal as otherwise the community would be forced to resort to agitation.
