| We expect more sound measures in near future: Mehbooba | | PDP welcomes GOI decision to move out troops from civilian properties | | Doda, April 20 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed the Central Government's decision to start the process of moving out troops from the orchards and the civilian and institutional properties in the State. "We welcome the decision and expect some more initiatives in the near future," PDP President, Ms Mehbooba Mufti said.
Addressing a public meeting at Thathri today, Ms Mufti said it is a significant move and a laudable confidence building measure especially in the run-up to the upcoming IIIrd Round Table Conference. She said her party is looking forward to more such concrete measures including reduction of troops and revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for the general relief of the people. Such measures, she said would consolidate the people's faith in the democratic institutions and processes facilitating peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, as has been time and again reiterated by her party.
Ms Mufti said the improvement in the situation has to be complemented with the people-oriented confidence building measures to make a visible impact on the ground. "The people have always responded positively to the measures aimed at providing general relief in the security situation," she said and added that the security forces have commendably accomplished their task and now the political forces and the civil society has to be given more space to consolidate and carry forward the normalization and democratic process.
The visible turnaround in the situation after October 2002 elections, Ms Mufti said was the outcome of the PDP-led Government's "healing touch" policy as the people saw and felt the perceptible change in the security situation. "It is heartening to note that the relief in security situation at that time had made its impact even in the remotest corners of the State," she said and added that the greatest satisfaction for her party today is that the people across the length and breadth of the State acknowledge the change they witnessed immediately after the Coalition Government took over in October 2002.
Ms Mufti said the more than decade long turmoil has left behind tragic human miseries and a collective effort is now needed to rehabilitate the victims of violence so that they could live honorable lives. "A rehabilitation program has to be formulated and implemented at the earliest to bring joy to the families who have lost their near and dear ones during militancy," she said and added that it is the primary duty of the Government and the society to take care of the thousands of orphans, widows and destitute whose lives have been wrecked by the violence.
Ms Mufti said for her party, the people's interests are supreme and it would continue to struggle for their dignity and prosperity, whether in or out of the Government.
Senior PDP leaders, Ghulam Hassan Mir, Tariq Hameed Karra and Sayed Asghar Ali also addressed the meeting.
