KATRA, APRIL 20
Governor Lt. General (Retd) S K Sinha today said that youth carnivals forge an alliance of camaraderie and harmony in the younger generation upon whom lies the future of great Indian nation.

Inaugurating Springfest-2007, the first ever mega event of youth from all over Jammu region, at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University here this morning the Governor exuded confidence that such events will generate a healthy and competitive spirit enabling them to sharpen their talent and skills in extra curricular activities

In the years to come, I hope this University will emerge as an epicenter of such activities and a thriving hub of youth exchange, the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University, added.

Referring to the academic odyssey of the University, the Governor noted with satisfaction that SMVDU has repeated its performance of hundred per cent placement for its second batch of MBA graduates in reputed multi-national companies this year with added attraction of enhanced pay packages. Though there is no reservation in any discipline of the university, yet those placed in various companies belong to Jammu and Kashmir, he added.

General Sinha said that whenever he visited the campus he felt himself like a gardner who blooms with joy while seeing his saplings flower. He elaborately dwelt on the infrastructure development of the university and said it took off on a positive note with President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam taking the first class of the varsity. He added that the Prime Minister has accepted his request to deliver the first convocation address in the campus. He said the university is poised to function in full steam in the years to come and hoped that it will grow as an institution of excellence.

The Governor hoped that the ongoing Springfest will provide an opportunity to youth of various institutions to interact and understand each other better. This also strengthens national integration and inculcates the spirit of camaraderie among fellow students, he added. Emphasizing the importance of extra curricular activities along side academics, he said in a lighter vein ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. Physical activities, he said, give boost to physical and mental growth of youth.

In his address, Vice Chancellor, Prof N K Bansal expressed his gratitude to the Governor for his unstinted support for the development of the university and lauded his vision of creating an institution which can claim to be a centre of excellence. ‘Such visions don’t emanate from normal humans but come from super humans’, he said, adding that General Sinha has nurtured a dream which is being translated into reality in the lap of Trikuta Hills with the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi.

Prof Bansal said that along side sticking to tight academic schedule, the university is giving impetus to physical activities of the students with the constant support of faculty and the staff. ‘We are traversing the path of excellence and it requires one to have “junoon” (passion) for scaling heights’, he added.

The Vice Chancellor said that besides dissieminating knowledge, the university wants to carve out a space for itself in the sports and cultural arena of the State.

Prof J M Mahajan, Dean College of Engineering and Chairman of the Springfest gave an overview of the festival and said The event has been designed to generate sense of happiness, joyfulness and healthy competition among the students at the just conclusion of academic work which can bring enthusiasm and refreshing strength to take their examinations.

The Springfest-2007 is divided into two parts; one holding the intra university events and second for inter-university events. The first two days will be completely devoted to intra university events where SMVDU students, who have been divided into five houses namely; Jal, Vayu, Agni, Prithvi and Akash, will compete individually and collectively for the benefit of their respective houses.

At the end of two days, the house which scores maximum marks will be declared as the winning house for award of “Vice Chancellor’s Trophy”. Further, the house which wins will also represent SMVDU in the inter University events on the third day for the “Chancellor’s Trophy”.

The winners of all the events both intra and inter will be awarded medals and prizes. The Chancellor’s Trophy and the Vice Chancellors Trophy along with medals and prizes for Inter-University events will be distributed in the Valedictory Function to be held on 22nd April.
