| 24 Kashmiri youth return home, surrender before army | | | Baramulla, April 20 At least twenty four militants laid down their arms before army and local police at Rampur brigade in Baramulla area of North Kashmir after crossing over to this side of border, an official spokesman said.
A defence spokesman said that militants belonging to various outfits surrendered along with their arms and ammunition.
The youth, army claimed, had crossed over to Pakistan and were receiving arms training in various camps across the border. However, after returning back home the youth returned to mainstream by laying down their arms.
Sources told News Agency of Kashmir that the militants who surrendered today had crossed to this side of the border in small groups during last few days.
It was reliably learnt that the militants had communicated to army that they want to surrender after crossing over to this side and were thus given a green signal at the border. “The army units manning the border were informed about their intrusion so that they may not be killed”, they added.
Under centrally sponsored surrender policy each of them would be given a sum of rupees two lakh to settle their businesses so as to survive, he added.
The militants laid down arms in a special ceremony organized by the army at its Rampur Brigade. Major General Ramesh Halgaly, General Officer Commanding, 19 Division, Parents, relatives and officers from local police and civil administration were present on the occasion.
Army in Jammu and Kashmir has introduced a special surrender programme for ‘kashmiri youth’ who want to lay down their arms and return to mainstream.
