Shut down in Banihal again, people hold protest

April 20 (NAK): A strong protest demonstration was taken out in Banihal town of Ramban district, which observed a complete shutdown on Friday against the arrest of four persons, including a couple, by the police on the charges of conspiring to kill chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Large number of people, including women and children, took to street soon after Friday prayers and staged a protest demonstration. They were demanding immediate release of four persons arrested by the police, last week.

Raising slogans against the government and police, the protestors blocked Jammu-Srinagar National Highway for more than an hour due which the vehicular movement was completely disrupted.

The protestors alleged that the police arrested the local villagers, including a couple, on false charges and the accused were not even remotely involve in any militancy related incident.

“From last one week ever one in the town is shouting that the arrested persons are innocent but police and state government seems to be unconcerned”, Abdul Majeed, one of the protestors told News Agency of Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the entire town observed a complete shut down for the forth time in last eight days, today.

All the shops and business establishments in the town remained closed, while thin attendance was witnessed in schools and government offices.

Four persons were arrested by the police from this town for allegedly conspiring to attack a public rally attended by Ghulam Nabi Azad, chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir with three other ministers.

The relatives of the arrested persons have already launched a hunger strike in the town demanding release of the accused or an independent probe by CBI.




Handwara Police seize illicit Timber

Srinagar April 20(NAK): Acting on a tip off, police Handwara raided a Sawmill Khirman Wadipora and seized about 60 Cfts illicit timber.

Police sources told News Agency of Kashmir that on receiving specific information police raided sawmill of Showkat Ahmad Ganie son of Subhan Ganie and seized the illicit timber stocked inside.

The Deodar timber costs about Rs, 50,000 to 60,000 in the market rate, sources added.
A case has been registered in police station Handwara under FIR No. 78/07 under section 379 RPC, 6F-Act.
The official spokesman claim that strict vigil by Handwara police to contain smuggling of deodar green timber has received great appreciation from the general public and religious leaders.
