MUMBAI: As the most eligible bachelor of the country, Abhishek Bachchan, wed the most beautiful woman in the world, Aishwarya Rai, the quiet Juhu neighbourhood saw frenzied activity. A burst of flaming gulmohurs and bright bougainvillea formed a colourful canopy over the two wedding venues — Jalsa and Prateeksha, the two Bachchan bungalows located within a five-minute drive of each other and staked out with scores of security guards and policemen.

A whoop of joy went up in the summer air as the bridegroom’s party emerged from Jalsa a few minutes before 5 pm. But onlookers, especially mediapersons, were disappointed when the fleet of massive luxury Konduskar buses hired by the Bachchans to ferry wedding guests to and fro moved in to conceal the view.

But even the Konduskars and sehra (veil) of fragrant white jasmine could not mask Abhishek’s excitement as he rode out on a white mare. As the wedding band struck the opening notes of the couple’s song Kajra Re, the young actor raised a hand to greet the crowd and obliged them with a little shoulder jig that sent them into ecstasy — and made all that waiting worth it. Within minutes, however, Abhishek dismounted and boarded one of the buses that headed for Prateeksha, where the wedding ceremony was later performed.

Among the guests were Samajawadi Party general secretary Amar Singh, industrialist Anil Ambani, Yash Chopra, Sachin Tendulkar and wife Anjali, Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia, Karan Johar, Kiron Kher with her son Sikander, Sanjay Dutt and friend Manyata, Kajol, Sonali Bendre and husband Goldie Behl, and Danny Denzongpa. Maharashtra chief minister’s actor son Riteish Deshmukh was also present.

Not invited but there in full force were fans. They had clambered on to tall trees and commandeered rooftops of neighbouring buildings, grabbing every vantage point they possibly could to get a dekko.
