| Kashmir valley and Leh remains cut off from the country | | |
Srinagar, Aug 6 ( The Kashmir valley and Leh remained cut-off from the rest of the country since last evening following the closure of Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Leh national highway.
Hundreds of vehicles are stranded on the 300-km-long Srinagar- Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, due to landslides, mudslides and falling of stones between Ramban and Ramsu, triggered by heavy rains.
A traffic police official told UNI that landslides and shooting of stones were reported at 168 km on the highway, forcing authorities to suspend the traffic movement for security reasons.
He said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway have pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put the highway through.
The official said no vehicle was allowed from Jammu or Srinagar today and only stranded vehicles would be allowed to move towards their respective destination after receiving green signal from the BRO.
However, Amarnath pilgrims were allowed to move in light vehicles from Jammu this morning as the ''Chharri Mubarak'' (holy mace of Lord Shiva) will leave Pahalgam base camp for cave shrine this afternoon on the last leg of the two-month long pilgrimage, ending on August nine.
The official said the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was also closed after a bridge was washed away in flash floods between Kargil and Leh road.
Efforts are on to rebuild the Balley bridge with the help of defence authorities.
The Srinagar-Drass-Kargil road was open for both way traffic, he said.
