| BJP blames PM for pro-Pakistan slogans in Kashmir rally | | | New Delhi, April 22 India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's "soft policy" towards terrorism after thousands of Kashmiris attended a rally in Srinagar Sunday shouting slogans for pro-Pakistan militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Condemning the rally, which was held to welcome back hardliner separatist Syed Ali Geelani, who underwent cancer treatment in Mumbai, the BJP asked the government to take "immediate action" against the protesters.
"Pro-Pakistani militant action is a result of soft policy adopted by the prime minister and the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government, towards challenge of terrorism. The Kashmir situation is worsening day by day because of this soft policy of the government," BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekhar said in a statement here.
"Pro-Pakistani slogans is a threat to national security. BJP always stands for policy of zero tolerance for issues concerning danger to national security," he said.
The BJP went on to say that the Kashmir issue was the result of "Nehruvian blunder of giving separate status to Jammu and Kashmir."
"This separate status is now converting into full-fledged separatism," the statement said, adding, "initiatives like round-table conference have no meaning unless this threat is addressed squarely".
Javadekar said the whole peace efforts and negotiations in Kashmir should be focused on security angle.
Geelani, 72, had opposed talks between Hurriyat leaders and the central government to bring peace in the insurgency-hit Valley.
Addressing the crowd, the Hurriyat Conference leader reportedly said Sunday: "Our ultimate goal is freedom from India."
