Early Times Report

Jammu, June 25 : Jats of Jammu and Kashmir today held a protest demonstration at Tehsil Office, Samba for granting OBC Status to Jats and for settlement of Refugee issues of POJK 1947, 1965 and 1971 under the leadership of Kamal Singh, President Jat Kalyan Sabha, who is spearheading the agitation for the last more than 9 years.
It is pertinent to mention here that Jats of all other states of Indian Union have been granted OBC status and the State of Jammu and Kashmir has been left out. Ch. Kamal Singh told the media persons that the leaders of ruling alliance in state are misleading the community on one pretext or the other. Sometimes they are promising the strip of 8 Kms along the international border is likely to be included in RBA category and sometimes they are pretending strip of 8 kms along the international border is likely to be covered under ALC category.
He said that these all are white lies of the political leaders of ruling alliance in the state and till not even a single village of the community has been included in the RBA category. With the result the community has got annoyed with the ruling Congress and National Conference party and now people of the community have taught a lesson to both these parties in the recently held parliamentary elections in the state of their partisan attitude. He warned the ruling alliance to desist from delaying tactics and misleading the innocent community who have suffered a lot during the partition of the country and in various Indo-Pak conflicts time and again.
Kamal Singh informed the media that more than 70% of the community are refugees of Deva Batala, Bhimber and Chhamb and are settled along Indo-Pak border and actual line of control from Kathua to Uri and have to suffer a lot during the Indo-Pak wars of 1974, 1965 and 1971 and 1999 Kargil Conflict.
They could not provide standard education owing to their habitations on borders which always remained disturbed after independence. They are living a pathetic life without proper civic amenities in the area. The Jat Kalyan Sabha members expressed their strong resentment and anguish over the callous attitude of the state coalition government for delaying the cabinet approval of package and not redressing the decades old legitimate just and genuine issue of one time rehabilitation settlement and other issues of POJK refugees of 1947, 1965 and 1971.
He further said that he failed to understand that people who sacrificed more than 6000 of their kith and kin of all ages and suffered material loss of millions of rupees are being ignored whereas on the other hand migrants who left their homes simply just out of anticipated fear and have been adverse social conditions suffered very negligible, physical and material loss are being doled out lavishly everyday with revived packages and till date they have been paid more than Rs. 30,000 Crores besides employment packages and other concessions in the name of reservation in almost all parts of the country.
He expressed great concern for such a cruel disparity and criticized the government for not applying the same yard sticks in case of POJK refugees of 1947, 1965, 1971 and border migrants of 1999 Kargil conflict who deserve much more than these migrants.
He urged upon Omar Abdullah and his coalition government to come out deep slumber and see the writing on the wall and should evolve fair criteria for drafting the package for each category keeping in view their material and physical/reservations as agreed by the government.
Members of Jat community from almost all the parts of the state viz Vijaypur, Samba, Bishnah, R.S. Pura, Jammu, Marh, Akhnoor, Khour, Nowshera, Mendher, Rajouri, Kathua also participated in the protest dharna.
