| Curfew relaxed for 4 hours in Sopore | | | Early Times Report BARAMULLA, June 26: Authorities relaxed curfew for four hours today in Sopore which was under strict restrictions since Tuesday following killing of a youth by security forces during violent protests triggered by death of a foreign militant in an encounter. The authorities said that if no untoward incident took place and situation remained peaceful and normal, the relaxation could be extended.Curfew was imposed in the town after the killing of Arshid Ahmad Shah, hundreds of people took to streets raising "pro-freedom slogans." Later, district authorities imposed restrictions on June 23 without any relaxation to prevent more demonstrations and violence. A youth Arshid Ahmad Shah S/O Abdul Aziz Shah R/O Seer village of Sopore Town was killed and four others were wounded when security forces opened fire to disperse the demonstrators who were protesting immediately after 20-hour-long fierce gun-battle came to end at Krankshivan in which a Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) foreign militant Mehmood Bhai was killed and a local militant was arrested. The public and private transport in curfew bound areas of Sopore town remained suspended for the third consecutive day as whole area was under complete siege with huge deployment of police and paramilitary CRPF men in the area. Streets in the town wore a deserted look as forces had sealed all the main roads, lanes and by lanes with barricades, concertina wires and mobile bunkers to restrict the civilian movement in the town. Residents of Sopore town alleged that there was acute shortage of essentials, particularly milk, vegetables, bread and medicine. However sources said that people are out in large numbers to buy the essentials commodities especially milk, vegetables and medicine. Meanwhile the government has constituted an enquiry committee comprising district magistrate of Baramulla to ascertain the factual position with respect to the causes and circumstances of the firing incident. The Inquiry Officer appointed yesterday to probe the killing of the youth asked eye-witnesses to depose before him from today. "Baramulla District Magistrate Farooq Ahmed Lone, who has been appointed as an inquiry officer to probe the killing of a civilian at Sopore on June 23, has notified that any person having any knowledge about the incident can depose before him between June 26 to June 30 from 2 PM onwards in his office," an official spokesman said. |
