| Gram Shree Mela-Jammu-2007 concludes | | | Jammu, April 23- The ten day long Gram Shree Mela-Jammu-2007 concluded here today amidst a scintillating cultural performance. Ch. Gharu Ram, MLA and former Minister for Rural development was the chief guest on the concluding function. The Gram Shree Mela was organized by Society Sanitation De. Economic and sponsored by Council for Advancement of Peoples Action and Rural Technology, Ministry of Rural Development, New Delhi. NGOs/Self Help Groups from all over the country put the artefacts for sale and Exhibition at Dussehra Ground Jammu for last ten days and did a brisk selling on the traditional items ranging from Gujarati suits, Rajasthani suit, phulkari suits and punjabi juttis, wooden work and paper machie products. A sale of around 25 lakh was witnessed during past 10 days. On the concluding days, NGOs were doing a brisk business with thousands of people thronging to the Gram Shree Mela. Rajesh Tiwari from Uttranchal said that Jammu-Mela was a new experience for them and the place is as peaceful as any other part of the country. He said that media hype regarding militancy is Jammu is limited to papers and TV channels only and the people are also very hospitable and kind. "We have not witnessed any hard bargaining from the customers and people are doing buying without any hassles," said Azim Ahmed from Lucknow. The business here was good and we hope that Govt. of India would organize more such events in the state, he said. PS Jamwal, president Society Sanitation said that CAPART, New Delhi has been promoting the sale and exhibition of rural artisans and the heavy sale has encouraged the participants to continue manufacturing traditional items. He said that Society sanitation has requested Govt. of India to organize more such activities in the state as this also gives boost to the tourism industry and spreads the mesage of peace and brotherhood. Speaking on the occasion Ch. Gharu Ram appreciated the efforts of organizors for promoting the traditional artisans. He said that Jammu and Kashmir government under the leadership of chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has been doing a lot of efforts to bring the state out of present turmoil. The efforts of NGOs and Govt. of India in this regard are also tremendous and these have to be in cohesion with each other. Ch. Gharu ram also distributed cheques, certificates and trophies among the participating NGOs and cultural troupes. |
