| Jehlum flowing far below danger mark | | No immediate threat of flood, situation being closely watched: Qazi | | Srinagar, August 06 Government has made all preliminary preparations to deal with the situation in the event of any emergency arising from incessant rainfall lashing the valley during last few days. However, there is no immediate threat of flood in river Jhelum which is still flowing far below the danger mark. The information was given at a High level meeting of various departments with Minister for PHE and flood Control Mr Qazi Mohammad Afzal in the chair. Among others meeting was attended by Divisional Commissioner Mr. Bhasharat Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Mr Aijaz Iqbal , Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Mr. Rayaz Ahmed Kamili, Joint Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation Mr. Javed Ahmed Shah, senior officers and Engineers of various Departments.. The meeting was informed that 18 dewatering pump stations and 12 mobile pumps are functioning round the clock to avoid water logging in the low laying areas of the Srinagar City. Likewise, 12 lakh of sand bags have been kept available to meet any emergency arising of over flow along the river Jehlum. Five and a half lakh sand bags have already been sent to vulnerable points. Three departments including Flood Control, Fire Services, Revenue besides Srinagar Municipal Corporation is closely monitoring the flood situation at various levels. All these Agencies have set up their separate control rooms to which people can contact in case of any emergency. Minister asked the concerned departments to keep their field staff available round the clock. He also directed for making available rescue boats and transportation to reach out people in case of any miss happening. |
