| AAI reverses decision to shift flight operations | | CM meets Praful, discusses JK airports | | NEW DELHI, April 23 Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad had a meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister Mr. Praful Patel here today. The meeting was among others attended by the Air Chief Marshal Mr. Fali Homi Major, Chairman Airport Authority of India Dr. K. Ramalingam, Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma and senior officers of Ministry of Civil Aviation and Airport Authority of India. Deliberating upon the issues pertaining to upgradation and expansion of Jammu, Srinagar and Leh airports Mr. Azad emphasized the need for early completion of the Terminal Building at Srinagar Airport so that the operation of international flights is started by the end of this year. Referring to the decision of Civil Aviation Ministry to shift operation of flights from Srinagar to Awantipora for next six months to speed up the upgradation work of Srinagar airport, Chief Minister impressed upon the Union Civil Aviation Minister to continue the operation of flights from Srinagar airport itself and simultaneously carry on the execution of works during the night hours. “This is necessitated to avoid inconvenience to people in general and domestic and international tourists in particular who intend to visit the valley during the summer”. Chief Minister maintained. The Union Minister agreed to this proposal of Chief Minister. Stating that Jammu airport is too small to accommodate increasing rush, Chief Minister underscored the importance of upgradation and expansion of Jammu airport to the level of international standards. Mr. Patel agreed to depute a team of experts within one week to study the feasibility in this regard. The meeting decided that after the visit of experts, Union Civil Aviation Minister, Chairman Airport Authority of India and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir will jointly visit the site within a fortnight. Chief Minister also discussed issue of expansion and upgradation of Leh airport and requested for increase in the frequency of flights from Jammu-Srinagar to Kargil especially in winter months. The Air Force Chief readily agreed to this proposal. Mr. Azad also proposed construction of two airports at Kishtwar and Surankote to facilitate operation of small aircrafts. Union Minister assured the Chief Minister that the team to study feasibility of expansion of Jammu airport will also study the possibilities of constructing these two airports. Later, taking to newsmen Mr. Azad thanked Union Civil Aviation Minister and Air Chief Marshal for agreeing to the demands put forth by the state.
