NEW DELHI, July 6: Speaking as chief guest at a seminar held here today to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee, Founder President of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pension, Ministry of Science & Technology (Independent Charge), Ministry of Earth Sciences (Independent Charge), Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, said that history and the previous regimes have been unfair to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee, as a result of which, he is today the most under-rated leader of independent India.
Describing Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee as a youth icon, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, even those who do not subscribe to the ideology of Dr. Mookherjee, will have to concede that at a time when there were hardly three or four Universities in whole of India and the Vice Chancellor was invariably a Britisher, the colonial government decided to appoint Dr. Mookherjee as Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University when he was hardly 34 in recognition of his extraordinary calibre and intellect.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said, we have failed to educate the country's youth about the real profile and values followed by Mookherjee. He said that Dr. Mookherjee was not only a man of conviction but also had the courage of conviction, which is why he could resign from the job of Vice Chancellor when he took to active public life and later resigned from the post of Union Minister over differences with the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.His sacrifice culminating in his untimely death in Kashmir is a landmark martyrdom in the history of independent India,he added.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said that Dr. Mookherjee's faith in nationalist politics is now being accepted more than ever before and the youth of present generation are rediscovering him as a source of inspiration.
Dwelling on the values in the education system today, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the education system today has suffered because the nation has failed to give the teacher the kind of status, respectability and emoluments that he deserves. He said the education of youngsters is influenced more by the conduct and practices followed by the elders rather than its mere teaching in the text book. Mookherjee's conduct in life as a teacher, if followed , will also have a healthy educative influence on youngsters,he observed
Shyam Jajoo, National Secretary, Bharatiya Janta Party, was the Guest of Honour on the occasion while Prof. Makhan Lal and Dr. Rajvir Singh were the other speakers. Dr. Jitendra Singh was also felicitated by the organizers of the function. |
