| 4 lakh hectares of land under Kharief Crop in Jammu division this year | | | JAMMU, APRIL 23 Minister for Agriculture and Cooperative Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar has asked the officers and field functionaries of agriculture department to ensure timely supply of quality seeds, fertilizers and pesticides to the farmers before the on set of the kharief season. The Minister was presiding over a review meeting of Agriculture Department here today. He said the Agriculture Department continues to be the primary sector of our economy guaranteeing direct or indirect livelihood to 10 lakh people of the state. He said that the department demands added attention for bringing it out of traditional folds and carrying on modern scientific lines. Mr. Zargar impressed upon the officers of Agriculture Department to shift latest scientific and technical know-how from laborites to the fields for increasing the agriculture production and facilitating the farming community. Mr. Zargar also asked the extension and enforcement wing of the department to aware the farmers about latest agriculture practices and keep vigil on the supply and distribution of quality seeds and fertilizers for ensuring bumper Kharief corp. Director Agriculture Jammu Mrs. Vinod Balla apprised that the net area of 4.02 lakh hectares would be brought under cultivation during kharief 2007 season. The meeting was also told that Targets for production of foodgrains in Jammu division have been fixed at 618 thousand tones for which adequate arrangements for providing inputs viz HYV seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, improved farm machines and tools to the farmers have already been made. While deliberating on the achievements under the sector, Mrs. Balla informed the meeting that special thrust is being given to vegetable production programme for which a production target of 155 thousand tones is envisaged with area coverage of 13 thousand hectares. 3000 quintal of HYV certified seed of Paddy, 4000 quintal of maize, 240 quintal of pulse, 2400 quintal of fodder seed shall be distributed among farmers during the commencing season in Jammu division. The meeting was attended among others by Joint Director, in-puts, Joint Director Extension, Joint Director SLUB, Chief Agriculture officers, Incharge of various schemes like Mushroom cultivation Command Area Development Programme and Research Wing.
