NDMA building task force for post disaster management: Gen Vij

A three day International Conference on “Geo-Environment: Challenges Ahead”, to mark the centenary celebrations of Department of Geology, University of Jammu (JU), was inaugurated at Zorawar Singh Auditorium Complex, JU here today.
Gen (Retd) N C Vij, Ex-Army Chief and Vice Chairman, National Disaster Management Association (NDMA) was the chief guest while Minister of Health and Medical Education Pt Mangat Ram Sharma was the guest of honour on the occasion. Vice Chancellor JU, Prof Amitabh Mattoo was also present during the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Gen Vij informed that Army has done a commendable job in the aftermath of all the natural disaster across the country. But now there is strong need to build a strong force to tackle the disaster and NDMA has been working in this direction, he added. Earlier, the conference was inaugurated with the lighting of the traditional lamp. In his welcome address, Prof Mattoo emphasized on the need to aware masses about possible natural disaster and precautionary measures to tackle with them.
Prof GVR Prasad, HoD Geology while briefing about the conference said the conference is being organised by the Post Graduate Department of Geology, JU and Jammu University Geology Alumni Association to mark the centenary celebrations of the establishment of Department of Geology. He informed that over 175 delegates from around the country and abroad are participating in this seminar. Various national and regional geological issues would be taken up during the conference like natural calamities and preparedness in handling them, water resources, climate change, preservation of natural resources, geo tourism etc. Two trips are also being organised to the Phanerozoic sections along National Highway to Srinagar and Guryul ravines in Kashmir. The alumni of the department who have made significant name for themselves on national and inter national level will be also be felicitated during the conference, he said.
