Rules and regulations for the weak, powerful make them
Need to scrutinize bureaucrats, politicians at Airports, railway stations
4/24/2007 12:08:35 AM

Jammu, Apr 23
If you are moving in a Honda City with tinted glasses, speak slick English and wear branded clothes the chances are that no police man or a traffic cop will stop you for checking at a Naka.
However, if you are traveling on a lowly scooter or a car than chances are that you shall need to produce all papers and get your vehicles checked as police will stop you wherever they want. The reason behind this police behaviour is the simple psychological fact that your status decides how the law treats you.
Almost similar is the situation at the local railway station and Airports in the state, if you are a city slicker with connections than you are through the formalities without any problem.
And if one is a bureaucrat or a politician in Jammu and Kashmir than chances are that he or she will get through even without any cursory checking as mandated by the security establishment.
However, the arrest of BJP MP Babu Bhai Katara at the Indira Gandhi International Airport has once again proved that there is a need for police and security agencies to change their mindset and treat every one at par to ensure that no crime is committed.
The Katara case proves that even the most powerful and rich in India are willing to do a con job provided the money is right and the same is true in Jammu and Kashmir.
Recently, huge quantities of gold were seized from a prominent businessman at Jammu airport, but the question is what if a MP, MLA or a Minister acts as a courier and indulges in smuggling of banned goods.
So, much is the security establishment in awe of the bureaucracy and political classes in the state that if some one powerful decides to take law in his hands than he can do the same with impunity.
In this trouble torn state, where strong links between militants and ruling classes have been uncovered, a top security official on the condition of anonymity said that there is need to ensure that every one is checked thoroughly at the Jammu and Srinagar airports as well as Railway stations and bus stands.
“Every one irrespective of status and position should be checked”, he added, admitting that there security men often tend to deal lightly with public figures and those with connections”.
Here it must be mentioned that large amount of cash and incriminating documents are shipped across the state and the country to fund the terror operations. Although people manages to catch the low rung operators but when it come to jet-setters having global connections than the knees turn weak.
