| Official Team Studies road Condition en Route Amarnath | | | Srinagar, April 24, A team of senior officers, including DIG Farooq Ahmed, visited Baltal on Monday to review the condition of the road and the track leading to Amarnath cave. The visit was part of the State Government exercise on improving the mountain track and the security grid in the entire area in view of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage commencing from June 30. The team, official sources said, found that the road between Srinagar and Baltal was fit for passenger traffic but from Baltal to the 13500 feet high mountain cave, considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati, the entire 14-km track was under heavy snow. The sources said today “the snow blanket is expected to melt by middle of June which could allow pilgrims to move to the holy cave without any problem.”They said “nothing can be said about the 32 km mountain track between Pahalgam and the holy cave because it was buried under snow.” The Shrine Board has announced that the two-month long annual Amarnath pilgrimage will start from June 30 which was subject to the fair weather and the condition of the two routes. The official team also identified areas where additional security pickets had to be established during the yatra. It was decided to keep the entire route from Sonamarg to the cave under a heavy security cover from the middle of next month.Another decision was that special patrol parties will be sent in advance to Sonamarg and Baltal for sanitizing the entire route upto to the cave. After the Pahalgam route was also thrown open for pilgrims security pickets would be established. The Shrine Board officials said that “in case the two routes were passable by the middle of June we expect over three lakh pilgrims to visit the mountain shrine.”
