| Vast oil, gas reserves in Jammu await govt attention | | | Jammu, April 24 Linking ‘too little’ exploration of mineral reserves in Jammu and Kashmir to indifference of government, Senior Research Fellow Advisor North Africa research and Training University College of London Department of Earth Sciences, Dr. Bindra Thusu, today said the state could emerge as a great producer of petroleum and Gas products, if substantive steps are taken towards the extraction of these lucrative minerals. Bindra is one of the invitee at the three day International Conference on Geo-Environment, organized by University of Jammu. Bindra said Southern Jammu has vast potential for petroleum and Gas as established by surveys conducted from time to time. He however, regretted that the state government has never taken any concrete step in quest for the extraction of the reserve of white gold laid under the rocks in Jammu region similar to those found in Siberia, Africa and other continents. He said Infra-Cambrian rocks found in parts of Jammu are similar to those found in oil rich countries of Oman, North Africa and natural gas-rich Pakistan Bindra said at a similar seminar in March this year, Director General Hydrocarbons had made it clear that owing to the presence of hydrocarbon-yielding infra-Cambrian rocks, the state could get a great response from the companies across the world for exploring petroleum reserves. He however said that only way to make any progress on this front is to go for privatization. Dr Ajay K Sapproo another Geologist said that experiments were carried by ONGC in potential areas of Jammu region, but the further research was abandoned half way due to unknown reasons. He said the research work in the region can be resumed as it has become easier with the advent of new technology. He said, no doubt, the initial research will cost in millions and but if the sources is tapped state would give a run in money making even to the richest parts of the country. “Now we have modern technology and the areas can be categorized so as to get better results.
