| “Polnet” all set to invade Police Stations statewide | | Functioning of Police to get boost with this facility | |
Govind Chouhan Jammu | Apr 24 It seems Jammu and Kashmir Police Department has decided to completely overhaul the functioning of the entire department as the process of modernization has been witnessed in all its spheres. After, the installation of CCTVs over flying squad vehicles and over some vital installations, the Department has now introduced a new technology “Polnet” to keep all the Police Stations across the state connected computerizedly with their counterparts in other states of the country through satellite communication. According to sources, Polnet (Police Network) facility has been established in all the Police offices at district level except newly created districts. These district offices will serve as Hub office. The working of Polnet has been started at District level but it will start functioning in Police Stations after some time as the work is under progress. In Jammu, the hub has been established at Police Head Quarters (PHQ) while in Srinagar, it has been set up at Police Telecom Signal Centre. Similarly, each district of the state would have this facility. Meanwhile, the entire functioning of the Polnet is being controlled from New Delhi. It is to mention that this facility has already been established in several states. With the help of Polnet, all the Police stations across the state will be able to have access with their counterparts sitting in any other state of the country which would help them to finish the investigations with speed. A police official said that specially trained operators will be put in place to handle the network while sitting in hub offices and police stations. According to an estimate, Polnet will cost about Rs 1.5 lakh each at Police Station level while it will cost more at Hub office level. The burden on Police Control Rooms (PCRs) is expected to come down with the introduction of this facility. Meanwhile, Finance Home Commissioner B R Kundal said that the step is in line with the country wide campaign by Central govt to modernize the Police force. Police functioning will be further strengthened with the introduction of Polnet service as Cops of our state will now country wide access with their counterparts to expedite the investigation process. The work on the project is in full swing and expected to be completed very soon. When contacted, DGP Gopal Sharma confirmed the report about the installation of Polnet in state and said that file transfer, connectivity and messaging are being done through Polnet by District Police offices except newly created districts. Installation at Police Stations will also be completed after some time. He also expressed hope that functioning of Police will get a further boost by this facility as this scheme has been sponsored by the center for this purpose only. He said that every effort would be made by the department to ensure that police functions at the cutting edge of technology and performs at the optimum level.
