| Over 24000 hectares brought under orchards in Doda | | | Jammu, April 24 – Additional 2115 hectares were brought under cultivation of different horticulture crops in Doda district during last financial year by planting about four lakh plants benefiting 6994 farmers. With this, total area under orchards in Doda district has gone up to 24065 hectares by March last. Of the total plantations raised last financial year, 23000 high yielding and less gestation period plants of olive, high density apple, peach, cherry, pecanut, kiwis and budded and grafted walnuts were planted by the horticulture department. According to Chief Horticulture Officer Doda Mr. D. D. Dogra, to educate farming community about latest technical know-how in horticulture practices 35 awareness training camps for farmers were organized in the district under technology mission programme. A number of farmers were also sent within and outside the state for participating in various awareness camps and seminars. Under fruit and vegetable preservation programme, over six tonnes of different kinds of products were prepared and 64 mobile demonstrations conducted by the department. In addition, 105 women were also trained in the art of home scale fruit and vegetable preservation.
