| Diversification of Cooperatives must for catalyzing economic growth: Zargar | | | Jammu, April 25 Saying that Cooperative is a social need necessary for catalyzing economic growth Minister for Agriculture and Cooperative Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar today called for strengthening cooperative movement in the state to make it an important pillar of economic independence. He was addressing at a one-day workshop on “Micro Finance and Enterprise Development” through Cooperatives at Sehkari Bhawan here today. Others who spoke on the occasion include Ms. Shashi Rajagopalan, eminent cooperator and freelance consultant, Principal Secretary, Agriculture Mr. S. S. Sahni, Registrar Cooperative Mr. G. N. Qasba and Chief General Manager NABARD. Mr. Zargar said that the movement has a glorious past and hundreds of selfless cooperators associated with it were instrumental for green revolution. He said cooperative institutions have made laudable contribution in distributing essential commodities to the consumers of the state particularly farmers. He said need of the hour is to democratize such institutions where government only facilitates besides providing necessary moral and material help in capacity building and their smooth function. Mr. Zargar said that restoration of democratic character of cooperative institutions is top priority of government and efforts are on to revive and diversify the movement to bring new potential areas under its ambit for generating employment opportunities for unemployed youth. He said in this regard various steps have been taken during last four years and new sectors like poultry, diary etc were brought under its fold. He said as many as 400 poultry cooperative societies have been registered while encouraging turnover has been made during 2005-06 by 150 cooperative societies. For the empowerment of women we have also registered 2 women credit Cooperatives one each in Kashmir and Jammu with initial membership of 575 and 300 respectively, he added. On the occasion, eminent cooperator and freelance consultant Miss Shashi Rajagopalan put forth her expert views and stressed for strengthening these institutions at the grassroots level to make it a basic tool for the upliftment of the weaker sections of the society.
