| Taj inaugurates lives stock insurance scheme | | Asks youth to set up dairy, poultry units | | Jammu, April 25 Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) and Animal Husbandry Mr. Taj Mohi-ud-Din today inaugurated livestock Insurance Scheme at Raipur (Benglarh) in Samba at an impressive function organized by Animal and Sheep Husbandry department Jammu. Elucidating the significance of this pro-farmers insurance scheme, the Minister said that this will not only ensure security to the livestock but will also encourage people to adopt this vital sector to better their living standards. Mr. Taj emphasized the farmers in general and Gujjar and Bakarwal community in particular to keep quality high yield dairy cows and buffaloes for getting maximum returns. He asked the youth to come forward and take benefit of the welfare schemes launched by the government and impressed upon them to start their dairy and poultry units under self-employment schemes. Mr. Taj also explained that livestock Insurance Scheme is primarily meant for milch cattle and buffalo producing average 6-7 liters milk per day besides a farmer can get his two animals insured for one year or for three years. The 50 per cent premium is to be paid by beneficiary farmer and the remaining 50 per cent is to be paid by the department as insurance subsidy. In case of any eventuality, the claim is to be settled by the insurance company within 15 days, he added. Mr. Taj said the Animal and Sheep Husbandry has a vast scope for promotion in the state owing to the topography, climate availability of fodder and abundance of pastures and green meadows. He, however, said that the sector needs to be carried on modern and scientific lines and motivations and also asked the people to shift from traditional Animal and Sheep rearing to commercial scale. Secretary Animal and Sheep Husbandry department Sheikh Nissar Ahmad, Director Animal and Sheep Husbandry department Dr. S. C. Gupta and other senior officers of the department were present on the occasion.
