Jammu, July 23: Replying to a Starred Question in the Lok Sabha today,Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said, the new initiatives undertaken by his Ministry during the last seven weeks of his taking over the charge include a successful attempt to be more inclusive in order to engage certain eminent scientists who had been somehow left out of the mainstream during last several decades and the optimistic outcome of this initiative is that several NRI scientists have sent signals about their willingness to return back to India because in the changed environment they feel confident that they would be able to get the kind of work culture and remuneration they deserve. In addition, several foreign scientists are also coming to India for research projects because the kind of vast and diverse research resource material available in this country is not available in any other single country of the world, he added in response to a supplementary query by Kothapalli MP from Andhra Pradesh. Dr Jitendra Singh also referred to his initiatives within the last two months to encourage and support young scientific talent. As a part of this, he cited the example of 20 young students selected from across the country on merit basis who were sent last month to work with some renowned nobel laureates abroad. These students have come back and are enthusiastic to share their experience, he added. Expressing satisfaction over the fact that as per the UNESCO Science Report, India ranks at 9th position in the field of scientific research and development, Dr Jitendra Singh said, we hope to take forward the pace of research in this country and at the same time we are geared to meet constantly emerging new challenges. |
